CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

THE SCARE

GUS WAS STILL IN BED in the early morning hours of the next day, resting his eyes and trying not to think, when he heard a clear, piercing sound inside his head.

It was akin to a telepathic scream, and caused him to leap up and throw on his clothing as quickly as he could.

He appeared in Till’s kitchen with his shirt still half undone. She stood before the sink, shaking furiously. She had gone completely pale, and it took Gus only a moment to ascertain why. Something had gone terribly wrong with Emma.

“Put on yer shoes,” he said. “I’ll start the truck.”

She barely nodded, her face a portrait of fear and despair. As he threw on his leather jacket he was already dialing his cell phone, ready to tell Mrs. Nesbitt that they were going to run a little behind this morning.

He rushed outside and went around the front of the truck to open Till’s door for her. She dashed out of the house with only a sweater over her shoulders and no idea she’d forgotten her purse.

Gus tilted his head and gazed at her with great affection. “Oh, Tilda Mae,” he whispered, and a moment later she was wearing the coat and holding her purse in her lap.

“What would I do without you?” she whispered, tears brimming and threatening to spill.

He placed his hand on top of hers for a moment before he was forced to pull it back. The warmth and chemistry between them was unmistakable, and unbearable, even with so slight a touch. “I promise, ye’ll never have to find out.”

He threw the truck into gear and kicked up gravel as he sped down Finch Street. “Any idea what the trouble is?”

“I’m not sure. I tried to get an impression but I could only feel her fear,” Till replied, catching her bottom lip between her teeth and holding it there a moment before going on. “She’s afraid and wished for me. That’s all I know.”

“We’ll have to find Dianne,” Gus instructed, knowing that Till was far too preoccupied to think of a plan of action. Everything inside of her was just telling her that she needed to get to Emma, but they had to be cautious how they went about doing it. The child may understand exactly what Till was, but no one else did.
